Duke University Medical Center – Durham, NC
Medical Sciences Research Building
Duke University’s goal was to develop a multi-building campus of researchers sharing resources and interacting with cross-disciplinary colleagues. At the completion of the Science Campus Master Plan, both the University and the Medical Center initiated research building projects. The first of these projects is the Levine Science Research Center, which was immediately followed by a new research building for the Medical School. Concurrent with the University’s development of Levine Science Research Center (also by Payette), a 178,000-square-foot Medical Sciences Research Building was constructed with a satellite animal facility, and elevated covered-walkway connections to existing medical school research facilities. The 80 modular labs can be converted from 4- to 6-person labs to 8- to 12-person labs by removing partitions that are free of any services.
